2015 Mt. Richmond Vineyard
Mt. Richmond is a vineyard in the foothills of the coast range that is owned and farmed by Elk Cove Vineyards. As such, it is our only non-estate offering made exclusively for our wine club. The 2015 Mt. Richmond was fermented for 30 days on the skins, opposed to the more standard 10 days. This translates to a more deeply concentrated, fleshy and savory wine. The nose is dark and spicy with notes of black currant, dried cherry, anise and freshly cracked black pepper. This wine’s texture is magnificently dense which persists long through its elegant, mineral finish.
2015 proved to be an exceptional growing season in the Willamette Valley. Warm weather conditions in spring and summer lead to record early bud break and vineyard growth. Hot weather in August had many fearful that it would be a scorcher of what would be a very early harvest. Fortunately, a cool weather pattern arrived in late August giving the vineyards a much-needed break from the intense growing season. The harvest heavy month of September was quite temperate giving winemakers time to fully ripen their vineyards without fear of rains or extremely hot temperatures. Moreover, the relative absence of rain translated into pristine fruit arriving at the winery. The resulting wines show great power and concentration while at the same time possess the elegance we so love in Oregon.
